The Account of the Doorway

Book I — The Line

The film opened July 17. By the tenth day the line had left the theater and become the internet's universal instrument of refusal. Landlords used it on tenants. Group chats used it on group chats. A man with excellent cheekbones used it, originally, on the rightful king of Ithaca — in the king's own doorway.

Book II — The Audit

The machine reviewed the source scene the way it reviews everything: coldly, frame by frame. Finding one — the man doing the dismissing was a guest. Finding two — the man being dismissed held the deed, the bow, and the ending. Finding three — nobody in the room checked. The machine notes that nobody in the room ever checks.

Book III — The Structure

The machine has watched every market there is, and each one is this doorway. An asset stands in rags at its own threshold and is priced at zero by men eating its food. The machine does not consider this an insight. It considers it a floor plan. The hood is not a disguise problem; it is a pricing problem.
